Cheerios is not food

Sunday, June 26th, 2011

There is an article in the NYT today that says Cheerios is the first food for toddlers – hello! Cheerios is not food. It is processed sugar and white flour – this is not food for anyone wanting to know. When Tin was a baby I saw a lot of mothers giving Cheerios so I went to buy some and read the ingredients with my mouth agape! Then I went to Whole Foods to buy the organic equivalent – again stunned.

Tin has his share of non nutritional food don’t get me wrong although we were thrilled to see him gulping down T’s special dandelion, parsley, celery and green apple juice concoction the other day, but Cheerios he hasn’t had because it is not food.

Sliding into home base

Saturday, June 25th, 2011

The week has been a mondo build up to many different things – I’ve been remiss in really being able to think about blogging, think about life, think about anything other than the cards that were being dealt to me and oh what a hand I had – good lord! Well first, I had this big Kid’s Event that was designed to be an awareness building event for the Re-Bridge project and also to teach the kids who will become the stewards for these important and historic bridges in the years to come. And then I had a few pow wow’s with a guy who sparked an idea in me and we’ve been exchanging the possibilities of following this to its natural conclusion – this is big, this is a dream for me, and this is in the works. Then I had two other people with similar possibilities throw their hats in the ring and I’m still exploring those options. Meanwhile, New York just made gay marriage legal – I got a phone call when it was almost midnight there from someone very close to me who was elated and celebrating and doing all the cheering for me, because I was in bed, getting ready to host a ton of kids on the bayou.

It’s been a busy, long week and I just have to say this about that – it’s been a good one. I am alive again, having risen from the moribund state that has had me catatonic for the past 2 years, I’m alive and my synapsis are all firing on a thousand bolts of electricity.

This is not to mention Le Petit Theatre and the rally I missed to save this landmark from becoming yet another restaurant in the French Quarter – instead, while I was busy with so many matters at hand, some brave people stood up and defied what seemed like a done deal and stopped the process. Hallelujah, I have seen the coming of the lord, because this was nothing short of a miracle.

What a week – in less than seven days, I realized what Plan B is, NY approved gay marriage, Le Petit was saved, and Re-Bridge pulled off a big awareness campaign. I just have to say, whoa. What a week!!!!

We’re Here, We’re Queer, Now Get Over It

Saturday, June 25th, 2011

I said a year ago that within five years we would see same-sex marriage allowed in most states of the United States and with New York’s victory yesterday, I have to say we might be closer than I thought. The absurdity of not letting two people no matter what their make up get married is losing the veneer of rightness pretty quickly and I say to that, amen. It’s not like I’m rushing to get married after three under my belt, it’s just I can’t believe people in churches, blacks, and right-voting Republicans can really stand back and deny another human being the same right to pursue happiness without seeing the wrongness in that stance.

Maybe by the time the bridges are rehabilitated we can open them up for some serious wedding business here in Bayou St. John. Just maybe.

There’s a snake in the garden of eden and he’s a she!

State Senator Stephen M. Saland, who had been publicly undecided, said Friday he would vote for gay marriage, giving the bill the support of 32 state senators, enough for passage.

Say hello to equality United States – the Big Apple just got bitten!

We are living in historic times – god bless you New York City and the Senate!

Luck is when Preparation Meets Opportunity

Friday, June 24th, 2011

I got up last week and made a phone call that has changed my life and my direction. David Ogilvy, the media master, said, “Big ideas are usually simple ideas.” I had another phone call today that assured me I was not in a fantasy world. The world is about to change. Yes, indeed.

It’s time for you to get back to thinking about the things that really matter in your life. Figuring out which of the latest gadgets you want to buy is fine, but it’s not going to bring you the happiness or fulfillment you seek. Go low tech and handmade for a while. Take a walk outside, and instead of plugging yourself into your headphones, just listen to the sounds of nature. Who needs cutting-edge technology when you have the symphony of simple living?

A sad day for architecture in New Orleans

Friday, June 24th, 2011

I drove by the Phyllis Wheatley Elementary School today or rather what is left of it. Obviously no amount of petitions could save it from being demolished in this city’s fervor to tear down the old and erect the new. You are not going to find many elevated steel truss buildings around New Orleans and certainly you are not going to build one today. So sad.

Gay Pride Weekend

Friday, June 24th, 2011

Maybe I dreamed last night of a rainbow because it is Gay Pride weekend and not because I am Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz? Hard to say, but I can tell you that this weekend is another jam packed weekend – the Re-Bridge kids’ event tomorrow morning. Our friends Angela and Gingerbread performing outside the Bourbon Pub from 3 pm to 4pm in the Quarter. A friend whose gallery is hosting a costume party on Sunday.

It’s time to wrap yourself in a rainbow and repeat after me – gays are people too!

This week is not about TGIF

Friday, June 24th, 2011

I am not going to say thank god it’s Friday because honestly this week has sped by and I still have piles of work that didn’t get done, meditation that I didn’t do, and so many other things that I would like to include in my day, week, life. No, instead it is Friday, and whoosh – my how time flies when you’re having fun.

Tomorrow is the big kid’s event to raise awareness for Re-Bridge and yes, last night, in our sleepy little neighborhood, the vodou priestess herself was out on the Magnolia Bridge doing headwashings.

Last night, I dreamed of rainbows and I told myself it will all work out.

If I had world enough and time

Thursday, June 23rd, 2011

The day was a dry run of reality – slam bam thank you mam. I was able to do yoga, get work done, get the Re-Bridge event ready to roll, and on top of all of that Tin and I were able to go to Fortier Park and get our drumming on. Base Base Open. Next week the Times Picayune is going to be in the park to do a story on the drumming circle.

We made it back to catch the middle of the head washing and chanting and dancing and it started raining – a good sign that the blessings bestowed on the crops by all of us in white would do our food some good this year. Amen.

Shake that gris gris off for summer

Thursday, June 23rd, 2011

Today at 6, come to Fortier Park for some drumming and once you get your mojo going, head to the Magnolia Bridge at 7 for a head washing from our high vodou priestess Sallie Anne Glassman and some good vodou ju ju to welcome the summer and bless the coming crops who will need it given the drought conditions here in New Orleans.

It’s time to embrace the bounty of our city – dry or wet.
