Like many things – the more you know, the harder it is to go about with your neanderthal ways. T came home the other day and said we might think about becoming vegetarians. And we both sighed. I ate mainly vegetarian for twenty years without realizing I was doing something. Then I started eating meat again. If you really think about things like eating meat, how chickens are raised, and that a pig is no different than a dog, you really have to start questioning a lot of what you put in your mouth and why.
T’s suggestion was to start tapering off and I instantly said no, it is all or nothing, but I think she’s right, if you’re not willing to stop outright, tapering off is a step in the right direction. So we are going to start making adjustments around here. Cutting back on meat, increasing vegetarian meals.
Lotsa luck! Even though I’m philosophically a vegetarian, I grew up eating the devil or drinking his broth. (I refused to eat meat as a child but I loved gravy and grandma loved telling me I might as well eat the devil as drink his broth.) What I had to do was to forgive myself for not being perfect all the time. So I fall off the wagon nearly everytime we eat out because I don’t consider fish, shellfish, or chicken to be vegetarian as some people do–anything with eyes and a face is meat–and it complicates things so much trying to order meatless when what you really want is that yummy looking sausage specialty. I’m doing okay mostly. As Popeye said I YAM WHAT I YAM and that means I eat meat now and then.
Since our hostesses fixed us hamburgers, it is hard to say what we are, but we’re going to work on it. I like your grandma’s quote though – it’s a keeper.
