There are no innocent bystanders

Last night after the walk, I got home and B called to come meet her and K and have a salad al fresco. When I got there they were sitting a few tables down from a rowdy group of about 8 couples. While we were eating our salad, the rowdiness kicked up a few notches and the next thing I knew the man towards the end of the table had his girlfriend’s hair in his hands and he was roughing her up. I jumped up from the table and went over and told him to stop immediately. He got up as if he was going to hit me but I told him to come on with his bad self and said, “Act like a man, or at least try to. A man doesn’t hit a woman.” Then the woman in a low voice said, “He wouldn’t hurt me.” And I just glared at her. The man at the other end said, “We have this under control.” And I said, you do, huh, all you men sitting here watching this man hit her and not one of you do one thing. None of you are acting like men. You’re a bunch of cowards.”

At that point, the guy who was eating dinner next to me with his family came behind me and reiterated what I had said. He said, “Do not lay a hand on her or you’ll have hell to pay.”

Several more people came up and the table and the man got the message. But I knew her hell wasn’t over with.

How is it that people can sit by when someone is being hurt? I’ll never be able to understand this no matter how long I live.
