A break in the action

The summer heat took a break yesterday for the first time in weeks if not months. The family pool was a tad on the cool side and that was during the bright light of day. I walked the dogs this morning and passed Ms. Marie, 95 years old on the other side of the bayou, she said the air was fresh, and then I passed Ms. Dagmar, also 95 years old, and she was looking chipper in her plaid peddle pushers, nice day she said. Tatjana took Tin to the park this morning, the first time he has had a real outdoor activity that didn’t involve water in months.

Yes, it’s a sign of the times, summer is nearing an end and that is sad and wonderful all wrapped up in one because it’s back to school (or starting school as in the case of Tin), it’s nearing the end of family pool days, and more importantly, the light is changing, I noticed it this morning. The fall light was seeping in gently. And so too comes the cool days that for me have always been visited with melancholy and nostalgia, even though I will only acknowledge the appearance of these feelings and let them go by.

It’s Monday, mid August and so I’m sure there are more hot days of summer to be had here in New Orleans, but for today, there is a sense of change, a fresh wind blowing, a break in the action.
