Hen Party at Swirl

Forget the coffee klatch, the wine swirling is way more fun BUT here’s the key – do it on a full stomach – that’s what saved me from overdoing last night. Meanwhile, it was good to catch up with G and to have R join us and to talk like biddies because there is always so much to talk about when it comes to shoes, men, careers, weight, hair, New Orleans, etc. I’ll save some of my favorite quotes from the evening for a more private venue but one that stands out is “how did we not eat for so long?” referring to that tender age when women just don’t eat. I went from being 16 to being 23 on cigarettes and diet coke and I weighed a mere 118 pounds. I remember my brothers telling me I looked like shit and needed my curves back and I was like, yeah you just don’t want me to look cute – ahem, they were slightly overprotective.

Okay, everyone was downright obsessive, my brothers and father anyway, about my body – I was born voluptuous, came out of the womb DD and I can remember sitting at the dining room table at a very tender and awkward age when I was about 9 and looked about 17, when the discussion was “is Rachel wearing the right bra?” – I was like, excuse me, could we talk about something else, like traffic and weather, like other families?

A mere 25 years later, I love my curves.

I’ve come a long way, baby.
