Easter’s almost over – the snow has melted and we took the high road to Taos – more gorgeous, show stopping scenery – then stopping at Chimayo to see the church, only I thought we were going to see cliff dwellings. Eighteen years I’ve thought Chimayo was about cliff dwellings and then I was standing in front of this ancient church listening to the native accent of the priest offering mass to a standing room only crowd and I had this, is that all there is moment, just as the Native American dancers were starting to line up with shelled bells wrapped around their bare ankles in the freezing cold.
We headed up to Taos and missed the St. Francis de Asis church in Rancho Taos because again I thought it was in Taos proper. And it was snowing and raining and we made a loop around Taos and then headed up the road to Orlando’s for a delicious lunch of enchiladas and chile rellenos and Dos Equis beer.
We took the road running alongside the Rio Grande and the colors of the foliage were stark in their umber, sage, and carmine – like transparent streams of silk.
Back at the ranch – we have decided to stay in and watch the second show of Mad Men – we rented the first episodes and have to admit the pilot was awesome, much better than the two shows we dropped in on lately. We’ll finish out the vacation lounging on the big red leather couch and thinking about our time here.
