Adopting a child is like entering another dimension. The intimacy that develops with you and the birthgiver requires a large dose of patience, empathy, and faith. It’s hard to imagine if I were younger than my years and going into this arrangement. I was too emotionally immature to have been able to grasp the parts of this that don’t get to be tidily wrapped up in a bow, to have understood that my joy might be someone else’s sorrow, but that it might be alright in the long run, and inevitably what will ultimately come from this is a life all onto itself who will judge our actions and their impact on her life in her own ways and through her own lens and that all you can do at this point is hope the mistakes you make along the way are laughable and negligible when they are held in account.
