Down to the right of the LaLa near Dumaine is an old mansion called Fairview – which looks like a haunted house it is so dilapidated. Turns out someone has bought it but despite the fact that when they first bought it they cut back the weeds, the weeds are back up almost blocking the view of the house again. Last night on the bayou for a glass of wine and neighborly visit, there was speculation the person who bought it is going to tear down the house and subdivide the lot and two new houses will be built there. Sigh.
There was also more speculation that across the bayou to the right of Ms. Marie that house was being raised and then going to be split into four condominiums. If they can salvage the architecture of the house in the meantime, I don’t care how many people live there. But sadly some of these old houses are in danger with new owners of being plowed under and reconstructed in some not so pithy way – it’s like a Metairie version of New Orleans – they are trying to stay in context but they just can’t.
Meanwhile the big vacation lot on Moss and St John Court is for sale with a reduced price of a mere half a million. One neighbor suggested it be subdivided into four lots and put cottages there in keeping with St John Court’s smaller houses. I think that is a great idea. But who can afford to develop this lot and build something really nice.
Oh if there were money to save our neighborhood from progressing the wrong way, I would gladly spend every dime I had to do so.
