Getting the picture right

F has a new iPhone and everyone’s photo comes up when they call her – she wanted to take my photo and took a couple of shots that I didn’t like – since a couple of our girlfriends really posed for their shot, I laid down on the fur rug and kicked my heels up and said, now, take this shot. So everytime I call, she can get a good laugh.

Be the prize

A girlfriend asks me, somewhat distressed, “he’s leaving me, what should I do?” – I said “be the prize” – so easy to offer advice but so hard to follow your own – but I mean it – don’t you love in Caddy Shack when Chevy Chase’s character says, “Be the ball, Bobby” – my friend is the prize, her boyfriend du jour doesn’t realize it, let him go, and in the infamous words of…

A run to clear the mind

There is possibly no better antidote to sitting at your desk all day furiously trying to do the impossible in too few hours than a run. Once the girls left, and I turned around two times, figured “fuck dinner” and went for a run. The evening is gorgeous – perfect weather, lights shimmering in the bayou, enough people out and about to make it feel safe. Listening to my IPOD, I started with Lucinda asking…

Tea and earnings – yikes!

It’s earnings season and I’m already five conference calls behind – late this afternoon, all dressed for Pilates, my doorbell rang and some girlfriends stopped by for Turkish tea bringing scones and pumpkin cake. I cut up a cantaloupe and we sat around and visited. At one point. a friend of ours called and asked what we were doing and F said “talking about men,” and T said, “me, I hope” and she said, “no…

Napoleon

A friend sends his favorite quote: Those who failed to oppose me, who readily agreed with me, accepted all my views, and yielded easily to my opinions, were those who did me the most injury, and were my worst enemies, because, by surrendering to me so easily, they encouraged me to go too far… I was then too powerful for any man, except myself, to injure me. I guessed successfully it was Napoleon who said…

On not letting things be and not living in the moment

A friend writes me late last night: your latest pendulum thang was the lesson of the day in our meditation class…he said notice agendas…notice what having one does…how does it effect you and others…what are you agendas for others…can you go more into an agendaless moment and see what happens… ok…that was hard…but liberating of course…a lifetime challenge next week’s challenge notice when you are planning or obssessing into the future…after the basic plan is…

The inner child

In the midst of an argument over having or not having children, I called my husband “dad” – how Freudian can you go? After complimenting his outfit on his way to a job he subconciously did not want, he lashed out at me to stop complimenting him – hello, 2 year old! My sister says to me about my mom, “she was only trying to . . .” – is it true that mom loves…

A kitchen witch who knows when to back down

I was born a native in the kitchen and luckily had four hungry older brothers and a thin sister who ate like a field hand (certain foods) who could appreciate my cooking along with a mother who wasn’t organized enough to get it together most of the time. So began my long journey of doing all the cooking, all the time. In 1990, when Steve and I got together, he had no desire to cook…

Holy cupola!

Our Lady of the Rosary had its cupola restored to its natural copper luster. All the green patina was shined away and now that the scaffolding is down (it’s been up since Katrina) even the bells clang a little louder. This morning, my wake up call were the bells – I haven’t actually heard them so well in a while (but then again the a/c has been running in my little cocoon). My neighbor says…
