I did not know

When Tatjana was out of the country and it was Tin and I alone, he was unruly and driving me nuts. I couldn’t figure out what was going on – was he acting out because she was gone, was he just going through a bad revolution – what was it? I was speaking to some nurses/mothers at the hospital and I was able to finally put two and two together. In the depth of our…

Were it different

Being here with baby Leo has made me realize what we missed when Tin came into our life. I remember the day perfectly, 14 degrees, Gary, Indiana, and rushing in and rushing out (wanting to get as much distance between me and Tin and there. I did’t get a chance to meet his great aunt, I didn’t get much of a chance to digest the city he was born into or the people. Instead I…

Celebrate good times, come on.

We are having a little party in the hotel room complete with balloons, children’s nursery rhymes, proseco and Leo. But he refuses to wake up for our little party. He just wants to sleep and sleep despite the noises we are making and the excitement that he is now officially the baby boy of my friend, who used to be known as a mother waiting to happen, and is now known simply as Leo’s mom.

Adoption 101

Adoption is another miracle of life. Today, I was in Kroger getting Proseco and a balloon to celebrate the legality of Baby Leo and the woman who blew up the balloon proceeded to tell me her life story. She was adopted. In her teenage years she thought about looking up her biological parents as she was in the throes of angst but then never did it, because she said, she had fabulous parents. She said…

The greeting

My friend became a mother today – legally – but the reality is she became a mother the first moment she laid eyes on her son. Or maybe she became a mother the first time she told the universe she was ready. Mothers, regardless if they are biological or adoptive, ask the same question, how will I know I will love this child. They know when they greet each other. Love consists in this, that…

No wait (wink wink)

We are being held captive by a garden gnome who only weighs about 8 lbs. He needs to eat, we feed him; he needs to have his diaper changed, we change him; he needs to sleep, we tip toe around him. He dictates our every move and we obey as we must. Every day there has been progress but each day comes with its highs and lows, and honestly we are exhausted from the details…

Every moment is an opportunity to learn

There is a marquis down the street from the hotel in front of a Methodist Church that states the best thing about life is it always offers new beginnings. The hospital we have been going to every day has a lot of babies come through with fetal alcohol syndrome, a product of being too close to Appalachia said the nurses. They need to be held a lot because they wail, but by the time they…

Trapped in Ohio

It’s interesting that every person I have spoken here in this city has said they are trapped in Ohio. Seems to me it would be an easy decision to get in the car and go but most of them cite family and friends making it impossible for them to live anywhere else. Considering I live in a city with family I never see, I don’t truthfully understand that as a reason to stay in a…
