The modern god

About twenty two years ago my brother became a religious fanatic of sorts. It was when his daughter was born and she weighed 1.9 lbs that he made a deal with god that he would be a good Jew and would devote himself to god if she would live and thrive. Recently, a friend wrote and said I should take Tin to the synagogue, teach him the path of Judaism because he will need god…

And a good time was passed…

We went to Meaux Bar last night where there is guaranteed satisfaction. The place was packed with locals enjoying possibly the best French New Orleans bistro in the world. Jim and Matthew are the best and Debbie serving us – what could be better? Well, it got better, Ed now works there too! The WWOZ Music Calendar was looking a little shy of anything we wanted to go listen to so we called up friends…

Gazpacho

Tin and I went to his last music class this morning and are taking a break for the summer. It’s hard to know if that is the best thing for him, on one hand today as I was marching around to these ungodly dull kiddie songs and getting him to get in step with me I thought is this good for him? I am reading Go Tell It On The Mountain by James Baldwin and…

What we call food

The girls all went out last night and I stayed home with tired Tin, rebellious obnoxious and un-napped Tin. Whew. By the time I put him to bed (early) he yelled and then put his head down and went right to sleep. And I planted myself in front of the television and watched my taped John Besh cooking shows. OMG! That guy is amazing. I watched about four episodes and afterwards felt that everything that…

Worth a trip

The New Orleans Museum of Art is holding its Centennial celebration in honor of its anniversary. The Ancestors of Congo Square exhibit is certainly worth a trip even though the way it was curated leaves something to be desired – namely dates (what were they thinking?) but the pieces are exquisite. The Madeline Albright pin collection is also worth seeing – Read My Pins is a fascinating look at how one woman used a talisman…

Little Drummer Boy

A friend came in from New York yesterday afternoon and since she has never met Tin, I was not inclined to wake him for drumming in Fortier Park with Angie and Gingerbread. But he woke up wanting drumming so late we rushed to the park where he instantly joined in the circle. Angie and Gingerbread teach drumming around the city and yesterday, Ginger brought her daughter Marissa to play the violin and Angie brought one…

Not for the love of money

I don’t regret the path I took in my career but there was a time, a time a long time ago, where I worked for the love of what I did and not for the money. That was back when I dreamed of being a novelist or even a song writer. Sixteen years working in the financial industry brought money to the forefront of my consciousness as it did for a lot of people who…

If it wasn’t for …

So here is a mash up of the day: Friend brings up issue with her that makes me think of my past and dredges up all of the horror, the horror, the horror, and then I realize if it weren’t for that, I’d not be here now. Yoga person chants May All People Be Happy and Free and says the corollary is May All I Do Make People Happy and Free, bringing me to my big…
