Faith is what keeps you going

J and I walked the dogs around the bayou this morning and we got to this tree and she pointed out a plaque that was barely visible on the tree – it’s a brass small plaque that says FAITH. But all you can see is the TH because the tree has formed a scar over the FAI. She said years ago when she was going through a lot in her life – health issues and…

Lola’s in MidCity

Last night G and I went to LaVita and F served us watermelon, Turkish stinky cheese and toasted bread. Then we walked across the street to eat salads at Lola’s. The dining room is just a big square with tables close together but there is a ton of colorful art work on the walls and my favorite is the Be Nice or Leave sign, which is replica of New Orleans’ native Dr. Bob’s work. He…

One woman’s struggle with anxiety

I met a talented woman recently who had a panic attack in front of me and I told her I would go speak to her about it and then saw her but there were too many people around so I sent her this email: I have been meaning to stop by to talk to you – not only because I do want that _____ but also to talk to you about my experience with panic…

Coming to wash us clean

Yesterday’s monsoon washed away a month’s worth of dirt and dust. The painters left my canoe right side up and so now it is filled with water and too heavy to turn over. M should be coming by for a check now that he is back from the midwest – so maybe I can get him to use his braun to flip it. Meanwhile the barren earth started running like rivulets into the street because…

Brief moments of profundity

A carload of people in the elevator getting off at every floor and I was left with the cute guy – with me getting off on 7 and him waiting on 8. He hung up his cellphone and sighed. Then he looked at me and said, “I’m too young to have cancer.” So I put my arm on his shoulder and said, “I’m sorry.” Then the elevator doors opened and I got off.

I don’t want to grow up

I had an annual check up with the doctor this morning and she had a young woman fresh from med school accompanying her. I was talking about how bad my hot flashes have been lately in my hormones’ last gasp on the dance floor. Then the heat got so bad I pulled my $2 fan from Chinatown out and fanned myself furiously. One of the nurses called to me, “can I have that fan?” –…

Chopped salad

In my stay-in mode Tuesday night, G decided to make us both chopped salads and bring them over to the LaLa to sit and eat on the bayou. BUT the porch had just been painted so it was more like sit in the screen porch in back with the hurricane lamps and eat and then walk out to the bayou and sit in the chairs that my neighbor has out there with our glasses of…

Sleep cures what ails you

At this point in life all women want is a good night’s sleep but it seems like insomnia plagues us all due to the hormonal shifts that are displacing our inner thermometers and the general feeling of achiness that drags on our joints. But last night due to a long hot soak in the tub and some inner peace I happened upon, I got seven hours of uninterrupted sleep – bless the small miracles in…
