LET THE GAMES BEGIN

My 50th birthday celebration got kicked off in earnest this weekend and the first stop was Commander’s Palace for lunch where they still pour 25 cent martinis and cosmos despite the fact that the dining room looks like it came out of the Royal Palace. My birthday cake was in the bread pudding souffle while the man flamed bananas foster.

Due to illness and just being plain too busy, I just spent the last hour catching up here. So you’re 50 now? Should I now move the link on my blog to the “typewriter generation” instead of the gen xrs? Anyhow, I’m glad I’m in time to wish you a happy birthday. Also, I want to say I’m very sorry the baby plans fell through. I know it’s a loss hard to understand now, and I so agree that it seems like a stupid decision for birthmother, but I really believe someday you’ll be able to look back and look at it in such a different light. You’re such a good writer, and I always wonder why more people don’t leave comments.

On to something less pertinent but seeing your post on Oprah’s recent show about women and sexuality, Dr. Diamond (Lisa) on Oprah’s show is a colleague of my daughter in the psychology department at UofU. They bake Christmas cookies together every year because they’re both gourmet cooks and enjoy it. We know Lisa and her partner well, and she’s a very brilliant social pyschologist. I think her new book is phenomenal with new insights on sexuality. An interesting aside of the show, it seems Oprah’s makeup department wanted to make her look like “every woman” USA so they smoothed out her hair style from the spiky look we’re familiar with here to what you saw on the show. Whatever they did, they couldn’t disguise her beauty, could they?

Oprah has a special place in my heart as she does in many people’s. Perhaps the best Oprah story I ever heard was when my ex husband, Steve, worked with a woman in Maine whose father had always been prejudice against blacks. He started watching Oprah and one day had an epiphany and was ashamed of us past feelings and repented. Wow. Big move for a man who was nearing 80.

I hope your illness is now gone?

I believe that my baby is going to come to me – I do have tremendous faith that one day I will be kissing and pinching the butt of a child who I know was the child meant for me. One day I will be writing in this blog about this wonderful presence in my life.

Thanks for your comments and for your insight.
