Playdate – the new social agenda

We had scheduled a playdate with friends who adopted from Ethiopia and asked Tin’s friend from across the bayou to stop by as well. Playdates are known for their socialization process and for the fun they provide for the kids, but when you have adopted a boy, whose skin is darker than your own, who must grow up in harmony with two mommies, it’s more than just a process it is a life that you have to carefully construct around him. This is a life that mirrors his own and creates normalcy around the fact that we are white, he is brown, we are two mothers, we are older, he is adopted, etc.

What’s a wonderful thing is to watch the families we know as friends and are getting to know now with Tin who are similarly non conventional enjoying a beautiful life together. So while we are mirroring Tin’s life back to him, we are also expanding on our own rich life.
