The family tree stops here

A long time ago I saw someone in a park in San Francisco wearing a tee shirt with a tree icon and this sentence on it – The Family Tree Stops Here! It rubbed me the wrong way when I saw it, like it was too strong, too much an ending with no beginning. We’ve heard about a possible baby being born on August 1st, and we’re going to see another new adoption attorney who…

Leaving Las Vegas, Metairie style

We were awoken from a dead sleep last night from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff who was standing in my mother’s apartment. She had fallen and was bruised badly and bleeding. We both raced over to Metairie to encounter three EMTs and one mother sitting at the kitchen table bruised, drinking and smoking. Not to mention, incoherent. I had hoped on the way that this might be a segue to get her into the emergency room,…

When I’m dead

I was cracking up at Iggy Pop on Fresh Air today citing how he has this ritual where he says, “If I was dead, I wouldn’t have to…” This morning, after having gone to sleep closing a chapter from Grit and Grace that was pretty horrific, I woke and had this feeling like I should jump out of bed, do this and that, and get to my desk by this time, or else. Then I…

The cautionary tale

The doctor today said that mom needs to quit drinking as in the last three weeks she has gotten worse not better. Later, I was listening to Iggy Pop on Fresh Air, who has a new album out; he was describing his near death experiences and how he was there one time, overdosed, on the brink of death, and heard his mother’s voice calling him back. He said she was the one who really cared…

Help support Swirl

The Faubourg St. John neighborhood association has issued a survey to assess the neighborhood’s opinion for allowing Swirl to sell wine by the glass and to also sell spirits by the bottle such as Perfect Vodka, my own personal favorite. I’m sending this out to all those not in the neighborhood who know Swirl because you live in New Orleans, know Swirl because you have visited me and gone there, or know Swirl because you…

General Motors – RIP

GM filed for bankruptcy this morning. One of the largest multinational advertisers and the largest domestic auto manufacturers. GM was once a lion, but I think its desire to hold onto old ways and not invent new ways is how it got into this mess. It’s almost like an outline of what is wrong with most major corporations. Steve Balmer of Microsoft said there are three tenets of business – come up with a good…

Super Sunday ushered in Super Summer

Summer doesn’t officially start till June 21st, but it started here in New Orleans yesterday. By the time 4:00 rolled around and we were walking down to see the Mardi Gras Indians gathering for their annual parade, the sun was so intense that we, even in hats and ice water in hand, sought shade immediately under a big oak. Like cattle, we all stood under the canopies along the bayou. By our tree, a group…

Stella in a glass

We rode our bikes this morning to the Marigny and had one of those delicious ice cold Stella on draft in those great Stella glasses. We live in a magical place and even riding through out of the way neighborhoods, it was good to see people porch hanging and the preparation around Claiborne for Super Sunday. Yes, it’s that time again, Super Sunday, another festival. The Mardi Gras Indians will be performing down on the…
