HFCS

I’m midway into the Omnivore’s Dilemma and decided to peruse the labels in our refrigerator feeling sure that no high fructose corn syrup was present anywhere because we don’t eat processed food and ah ha – I found some in the sweet pickle relish that I use for my tuna fish salad, I found it in the Creole Tomato dressing that I adore and now want to write them and tell them to change it, and I found them in some bread and butter pickles that I bought a while back also by Mt. Olive. But that was it.

The Van’s waffles that I have adored have too many ingredients in them but no HFCS and I hate the new design of the box and all the extra stuff like blueberry and added vitamins (their website says they are healthy – then stay that way and keep your ingredient list simple)  – could Van’s just stick to a multigrain organic waffle for godsakes and quit with all the extra bullshit. I’m reading this Pollan book and truthfully I hate the food industry – I hate what it stands for, what it has turned the American diet into and all of the ills that ensue from it.

And yet, yesterday I read that India is in a crisis over whether to continue to give the very poor grain coupons or just hand them cash – what? Here we are in this country of overproduction and obesity and India is barely scraping by trying to feed its inhabitants – really the world makes no sense. I wrote a colleague in India about it and she said that if the sharks weren’t trying to get their cut the food and care would go to the neediest people, but no, the sharks win.

High fructose corn syrup – give me a break.
