Halloween on the porch

Saturday night, my brother came over and rolled homemade sushi and friends came over and we hung out on the porch and handed out Moonpies and Jer handed our toothbrushes with sparkling toothpaste and I told the kids about eating Moonpies nearly 40 years ago and Jer told the kids that if they don’t brush their teeth now they are never going to get any dates. Most of the kids had rushed to the porch all excited in their adorable costumes and then sort of staggered away dazed and confused by TMI.

The kids didn’t arrive till late because Fortier Park had a big kid Trick or Treat event, but a tradition once again was born of being home for the holidays for us.

Then today after the big party at the Pitot House on the bayou – Voodoo on the Bayou which coincides with Voodoo Fest (that is still going on and sounds like it is in my backyard!) – I ran into the mayor of the neighborhood who was salvaging two big tombstone props – one read IMA GONER – and he told me they were throwing away plastic skulls and bone and so I did a little salvaging myself. So now we have more spooky props for next year.

Someone said this weekend that New Orleans had more spirits wandering around than probably any other place in America and the dead walked among us here and needed us to find peace as much as we needed their support. This has always been a town where the dead’s houses and neighborhoods are attended to much in the same way as the living. Not a bad place to live or die.

  1. Ahhh, the power of suggestion. Friday and Saturday, after I’d read you were planning to hand out moonpies I remembered how much I liked them. I’d already bought my stash of candy for the kids, but thinking maybe I hadn’t got enough decided I’d get a little bit more to have on hand just in case I ran out. Something I liked too, that I could eat a little at a time to get rid of and enjoy the process. Moonpies! Do you know that I couldn’t find a single Moonpie in this place?! Now I’m obsessed. Just as I was a year ago trying to find Guava jelly. When he finally found the jelly, Hubby bought me 4 jars! It’ll take me forever to eat all that jelly. It’ll take me about that long to find some Moonpies, I’ll bet! Can’t wait!
