{"id":9844,"date":"2010-11-08T18:10:36","date_gmt":"2010-11-08T23:10:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dangermond.org\/?p=9844"},"modified":"2010-11-08T18:11:59","modified_gmt":"2010-11-08T23:11:59","slug":"and-if-i-were-a-poet-it-would-go-something-like-this","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dangermond.org\/?p=9844","title":{"rendered":"And if I were a poet it would go something like this:"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Feeling Sorry for Myself While Standing Before the<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>Stegosaurus at the Natural History Museum in London<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Oh yes my friend, I&#8217;ve been there: the insects battering at the armored lids of your yellowish eyes<\/p>\n<p>the moment you pecked your way out of that rotten shell and dug out from your sandpit nest &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>And I&#8217;ve experienced the <em>thud thud thud<\/em> of your days, the indigestible monotony<\/p>\n<p>of everything&#8217;s spiny orangy-green husk. How the sun gets daily whiter and hotter and just<\/p>\n<p>a little bit closer. The week spent gobbling down your<\/p>\n<p>own weight&#8217;s worth of whatever. One stumpy footprint after another, tracking the trackless, squelching<\/p>\n<p>across last night&#8217;s marsh into a volcano-spattered today hip-deep in ash and yawning<\/p>\n<p>a muzzleful of sulfur. Swishing through stiff fronds,<\/p>\n<p>we drag an unbearable load of tombstones on our back and a fat lugubrious tail, shit-smutched and<\/p>\n<p>spiked. The flattening of the razor grass. The forgotten clutch of eggs. Our shrill yaps<\/p>\n<p>and groans. That tiny gray walnut for a brain and the fat black tongue tough as a bootsole &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>They&#8217;ve explained us away a dozen times: some passing meteorite or another, the rat-like mammals<\/p>\n<p>eating our pitiful young, all kinds of new weather.
