Tatjana was singing a lullabye to Tin in Croatian. When she translated it I knew why most people over there don’t smile a lot – it starts in childhood with sad lullabyes and then progresses to sad jokes as adults.<\/p>\n

za poto?i?em tim<\/div>\n

\u017eali srcem svim<\/div>\n
i tu\u017ean misli zeko<\/div>\n
da gdje je potok taj,<\/div>\n
mo\u017eda laste slijedi on<\/div>\n
u dalek ju\u017eni kraj.<\/div>\n
a onda dodje ljeto<\/div>\n
i snijeg se otopi<\/div>\n
vratio se poto?i?<\/div>\n
i zeko sretan bi.<\/div>\n
One winter\u2019s night<\/div>\n
Where the mountain is high<\/div>\n
A brook froze and was covered by snow.<\/div>\n
And one little bunny<\/div>\n
Looked everywhere to find it,<\/div>\n
Where did it go, it troubled him so.<\/div>\n

And he felt sorrow with all his heart<\/div>\n
And he wondered where the brook went,<\/div>\n
Maybe it followed the birds to the<\/div>\n
Faraway southern lands<\/div>\n

And the snow melted down,<\/div>\n
The brook came back<\/div>\n
And made bunny happy.<\/div>\n
