The “moi” in Mom

I was speaking to an ex colleague today about stretching our writer’s muscles again, about new opportunities, and about the brave new world of social media. And the truth is that I’m passionate about all of these things, but my main job right now is Mom and for that I’m grateful. I pick up Tin every day from school and we have different activities – on Thursdays, it’s Kenjy time, on Wednesdays is Jerrod time,…

Idinit

They say the early bird gets the worm, but today that was not true. It was day two of Tin waking up with nightmares and my lack of sleep. Everything was thrown back an hour or more. I ended up walking to City Park after 8 and I grumbled the whole way because that meant my swimming would be pushed out as well and then something happened to change my frown to a smile. I…

I am anointed

I’ve always considered that my place of worship is City Park. I’m not sure when it became so, but I did realize one day that any day I did not walk through the park was a day without my soul being inspired. This morning, I was walking through the park and looked across the lagoon to the Peristyle and saw a gospel choir robed in purple and gold lifting their voices to the sky. On…

Is that summer I see?

The days are getting longer and hotter but that just means summer is around the corner, or actually standing on the corner peaking around the telephone pole. I was walking to City Park and stopped to talk to my new neighbor who bought the historic house on the corner – he was bringing down an enormous pecan tree (he wasn’t, the tree company was) because it was rotten. Yes those pecan trees grow gigantic but…

Lucky duck

I went to walk the dogs today in City Park and a friend/neighbor was on her way there and so we joined forces and did a major walky talky – she’s older and her child is grown but it doesn’t mean her mothering has ended as she is now a grandmother with lots to do. But where we are is familiar – looking at the rest of our life which would most likely span a…

The Navy

The Navy has descended upon New Orleans occupying all ports with historic Tall Ships that are on display all week while the Navy personnel file out to our community to do service. I saw a bunch in City Park painting the pagodas. All cute, sweet and young. Hard to think of them having to actually go to war and makes you wonder about all the service people who die in war who are mostly anonymous…

Hood-less

I took the dogs for a walk this morning and it feels like months since I’ve actually walked the dogs. First thing that greeted me as I entered the park was a yellow crowned night heron, and then another and then another, and then a Great Blue Heron was tippy tapping on Goldfish Island, and a crew of ducklings startled it away. I was getting into the fowl play when an older woman came up…

If you build it, what will they do with it?

I have been noticing the great lawn at City Park. They built this enormous meadow with little gazebos around it that have wooden swings for people to hang out in. After it was installed, a group of handsome, young black men began meeting on the lawn on the weekends to play touch football. On weekday mornings women in their 30s and 40s began meeting there for a boot camp class. And then came the sign.…
