The Age of Aquarius

I have been trying not to give into this sort of negative or tumultuous energy that has been in the air but I was speaking to a source of mine and she said, “I’ve never been so busy in my life, it’s exhausting.” Boy, don’t I know it. I wondered out loud if the earth was maybe spinning faster or whether it was my new found 50 years of age that was making everything seem…

Night begets Day

As I packed my suitcase last night, trying to think of what I might want to wear three days from now – always a struggle – I thought about the comings and goings around here. We’re travelers, me and T, not vacationers, definitely travelers. While sometimes it is for work and sometimes it is for pleasure, I inherited gypsy blood and my wanderings are what keep me centered rather than the opposite. The pull of…

One more meditation and then I’m done

I like to keep my Tao te Ching beside my bed and pull it out on nights when I am discomforted. I was attempting a meditation on the Tao before Portugal and found that Portugal had the marvelous effect of renewal – just what my soul needed. But before I bring the Tao back to my bedside which I’ve now cleared to only the stack of books I know I will read rather than desire…

The rains that never came

We were due to have yet another storm pass through New Orleans early this week but it never came. Instead there has been this thickness in the air that can best be described by trying to imagine you got up and took five Valiums and then walked out your door. That’s about what it feels like. But there is something about this humid, thick, air that has its benefits. Hair and skin stay moist even…

I LOVE PELICANS

The pelicans are back on the bayou! I was walking Wolfie this morning and saw one big Louisiana brown pelican soar by me and land in the bayou. This is the first one I’ve seen and it means that fall is here. Although I was sweating when I saw the bird and the thick, humid air outside did not inform me it was fall, rather a continuation of summer. But the joy that fills my…

Julia redux

We went to see Julie and Julia last night. T hadn’t seen it yet, and neither had a friend. It was good again – in other words, great to see Meryl Streep play Julia Childs. How awesome is she, really. And I had the same criticisms of the other part of the story – the blogger who gets famous and finds success in imitating the one and only Julia Childs. At least last night, I…

Not going to pull any punches

There was another incident in the neighborhood last night at guess where? Pal’s – one of my neighbors sends this missive around: At aprox. 2:30 am last night, two masked gunmen kicked in the front door of Pal’s and ordered the bartender and the hired security man to the ground. The criminals then proceeded to confiscate customer wallets. One customer attempted to overpower a gunman and as a result of the struggle was shot. Thankfully,…
