Longing for no reason

The mystery of longing – I heard from a friend who longs for her lover, who is back with his other, safely tucked into the world of certainty. It’s not that I am a stranger to longing, and to longing for what or who I can’t have, it’s just that when you’re not doing it, it seems silly and stupid, but when you are doing it, it is omnipresent and eclipsing.

Terminal 5

I arrived in Terminal 5 of JFK, Jet Blue’s new home. Last time I had anything to do with a Terminal 5 was Heathrow where I said goodbye to all my favorite dresses and my traveling hula hoop. I had to stop a couple of times because it was so bright and clean and colorful I couldn’t believe I was in JFK – the biggest funkhole on the planet. And then my head started hurting…

Hollywood south

After Katrina, the first industry to reconnect with New Orleans was the film industry, when previously scheduled movies resumed shooting not too many months after we were able to get back in the city. That’s not to mention the many documentaries and films that were about Katrina. I met a woman today who does hair for the film industry – I love that Hollywood has decentralized and especially that they recognize the unique charm of…

Why do you live there?

I’ve often had people ask me how I could live in New Orleans, a backwater, a crime ridden, debauchery laden, hurricane target? And I say, easy. Why I live at the LaLa

Getting ready to head to NY and Boston on a business trip and was gathering stuff together to pack and take. I saw an image on the news of snow storms and it made me cringe. Checked the weather – snow on Friday in NY, 26 degrees in Boston this morning – GADZOOKS! It was 60 degrees here in New Orleans and about 64 degrees inside the LaLa, on the nippy side for us. When…

Opposites attract

My friend and I got in a long discussion about how opposites attract and people who are like you are better suited for friendships than for relationships. The fun part is when we were speaking about our foibles – OCD, fast moving, impatient, overscheduled – we both looked at each other and laughed and said, damn, I wouldn’t want to live with you! More importantly, it made us both realize how lucky we are to…

Scent of a disease

I heard on Terry Gross that there is an electronic nose being developed to smell diseases and conditions in sick people. Apparently, Hippocrates was able to smell diabetes by the juicy fruit breath of his patients and dogs have been known to smell seizures coming on. There are doctors today who use scent as diagnosis. My mom called her doctor because she has a neurological condition that makes her feet burn and flutter and basically…
