We speak of the people
\nwho live in this land,
\npeople who love nature\u2019s freedom
\nand beauty,
\nwho are alive with song
\nand poetry.<\/p>\n
But many of these people are also poor
\nand suffer oppression.
\nThe poor of our land
\nhave been wounded,
\nbut they are not crushed.
\nThe Spirit still lives.<\/p>\n
Their struggles and their poetry
\ntogether keep alive
\n\ta dream
\n\ta tradition
\n\ta longing
\n\ta promise
\nwhich is not just their dream,
\nbut the voiceless vision
\nburied beneath life\u2019s bitterness
\nwherever it is found.<\/p>\n
They sing of a life
\nfree and simple,
\nwith time for one another,
\nand for people\u2019s needs,
\nbased on the dignity of the human person,
\nat one with nature\u2019s beauty,
\ncrowned by poetry.
\nIf that dream dies,
\nall our struggles
\ndie with it.
\nThis struggle of resistance
\nis a struggle against violence\u2014
\nagainst institutional violence
\nwhich sometimes subtly,
\nsometimes brutally,
\nattacks human dignity and life.
\nAt stake is the spirit
\nof all our humanity.
