A woman who tries to equal man, lacks ambition

Rachel Alexandra won! Borel, who rode Mine That Bird to the Derby triumph two weeks ago, said: “She’s the greatest horse I have ever been on in my life.” The Kentucky-bred daughter of Medaglia d’Oro had won her previous five races by a total of 43 1/2 lengths and her owners decided it was time to test her ability against male horses. Rachel Alexandra justified the confidence by becoming the first filly to win the…

Sucking wind

I was so happy to head over to Swirl last night with the Gulf Breeze blowing just to sit outside with a glass of chilled Rose and talk to friends. I woke this morning after the first decent night’s sleep since Denver to inhale humidity and greet the day. In spin class, I tried extra hard to keep from scolding myself for not doing one blooming thing in Denver besides eat and drag my oxygen…

Rachel Alexandra – my Preakness fav

It isn’t that only a handful of fillies have won the Preakness or that jockey Calvin Borel jumped off the mount this week to ride Rachel Alexandra, it’s more that I overheard two guys with their racing sheets standing in the New Orleans Airport listening to Louis Armstrong being piped in over the sound system talking excitedly about what the jockey said – “I haven’t gotten to the bottom of her.” Today – watch it…

The Accidental Father

I was speaking to a friend of mine who met a woman with a baby four years ago. He still sees the woman and the baby is now a four year old little boy. He said he never intended to be a father. But he went on about how cute the little boy is and how he is like a grown up in ways. “When he falls down, I just tell him to get up…

20% less oxygen

We hiked Red Rocks today and I learned from a plaque that at this altitude we are breathing with 20% less oxygen. No wonder I am breathless. The rocks were gorgeous, and the cerinthe purpuris, one of my favorite flowering plants from California, dotted the trail.

Everything old is made new again

For all of you who are bored with life and all things you know, consider this, the 2009 Kentucky Derby. I can remember hooting and hollering to myself years ago when Funnyside almost won the Triple Crown. On the muddy track for the Derby this year, Mind that Bird bet on a winning strategy – stay in the pocket, and pop to the rail where it was less muddy to sprint to the finish line.…

This ole mare ain’t what she used to be

We were having an after dinner drink last night around the fireplace and I was fighting back the desire to just head up to go to sleep. A long time colleague looked over at me and said, “Are you done for the evening? You, Rachel? The one who stayed up to all hours? And danced on tables?” I felt guilty for not being the one who stays up and dances on tables. But truth is…

What price beauty?

Someone said yesterday that they were considering having another baby with their new husband but were concerned about how the baby would turn out looking. I piped in about the pig eyed mother who wanted to put her baby up for adoption and how I just said after meeting with her and seeing that she not only was pig eyed but her own mother was as well – I said, well, a pig eyed baby…

What surprise will Rachel bring this year?

A friend told me that her sister asks her every year, “What surprise will Rachel have this year?” I had this vague feeling that I needed to make my life interesting since there were people to please. I figure it is because I’m a late bloomer so a lot of what I might have learned, done, been came later to me than being a wild young child. Although a lot of people who knew me…

How through death we learn about life

I had so many conversations yesterday that were floating around my mind as I lay down to sleep last night. But during a span of about 45 minutes, I kept stumbling into a similar theme – the first was about a friend who lost her 16 year old son, the second was about a man who sat hospice with his dying mother, and on and on in this vein. Last night I dreamed of a…
