The tour continues…

Happy Valentine’s Day! We got up and hurried to head up to Slidell to take a swamp tour of Honey Island. I was jaded from living near City Park and seeing herons, egrets, turtles, and hawks as part of my daily diet. But it was nice being thick in the cypress swamp and just being in nature on a boat this morning. We saw a few alligators but most are still in hibernation. The only…

Know thyself, heal thyself

Every organism is unique. That is why relying on a medical professional to tell you what is wrong with you is not a great idea. You have to participate in your own health. I had gotten to the point where every little thing in the world aggravated the hell out of me. Every person, every spill, every toe stubbed – I would just feel like eating the head off a baby chick. And then I…

An embarrassment of riches

Yesterday late in the afternoon, I walked a few blocks down to the Green Market and bought two big bunches of kale, one bunch of collard greens, four filets of drum, a basket of beets, a sack of satsumas, and four pints of strawberries, and eight cookies (peanut butter, chocolate chip, oatmeal and macaroons coated with chocolate). Everything I bought was made or grown in Louisiana. You walk over to the Ferry Building on Saturdays…

If we’ve been here before how come we are the same?

Was speaking to a friend about how the worries of career and self actualization are always present but sometimes deafeningly loud and sometimes quietly shadowing us. Why is it, with worries that keep coming around – fears of losing, worries of uncertainty, anxiety over not grasping the whole picture – that we aren’t able to call them what they are, the lesser devils, the annoying traces or flashbacks from when we were young and thought…

Cosmic love

Had an excellent yoga class today and we began the class by singing about Radha’s love for Krishna. Radha represents a love so intoxicating that it is all consuming but better yet when Radha felt all this love bellowing out Radha realized the love was a mirror. It made me think of what E told me way back in the day about myself – that I have a profound capacity to love – I am…

I dwell in possibilities

There is a lot of negative-think going on right now in the world and there is only one response – accentuate the positive, eliminate the negative. Yes, our retirement has gone to hell in a handbasket, and no, things on Wall Street aren’t going to improve anytime soon, and Obama has his work cut out for him, god bless him. But today the sun came up, the weather in New Orleans is so delightful, birds…

Lose weight – Croatian style!

People look at T and think all Croatians are long and lithe but they’re not. Yes, they eat far less prepared food than us but they too suffer from too much of it sometimes. Mardi Gras is just underway and already we are talking about dieting, cutting back, not drinking etc. This morning, T proposed the astronaut’s diet and said she is going on it. I said, I’m in! The problem is when to start?…

Survey says…

The proverb says there are three things that never return: the spent arrow, the spoken word, and the lost opportunity. Today is Wednesday, the first day of the rest of your life in other proverbial sayings and the question is what will you do differently today than you did yesterday? Yesterday, I made two phone calls even though I didn’t want to because I wanted to assuage the nagging in my head. Today, I did…
