Baby Ike
I feel for those getting Ike because his offspring is whipping around the rocking chairs on the front porch and making it look pretty radical outside.
Houston, Texas who succored so many New Orleanians during Katrina is under assault by Ike. Right now the wind is roaring outside, sweeping up small objects and carrying them down the street aways. I’m so ready for hurricane season to be over, I could spit.
While we were evacuated my mother was at relatives house and they were watching the Republic National Convention and she was appalled at how much they “loved” Sarah Palin. I’m appalled but not shocked – she panders to mediocrity. She incites superficial emotion. She is anathema as a Vice Presidential candidate – how can anyone believe she is the retort to Hillary Clinton!!!! Meanwhile – we are motivated – we are activated – we will…
Flower like to tell me a Russian saying that life is a spiral and we keep coming around to the same place but the spiral enlarges and as time passes, it takes longer to come back, and we are on a higher plane when we next get there. Walking through City Park this morning, I passed my usual companions – hello, hello, hello. I noticed the grass cutters and that a lot of the limbs…
In the last seven years, our calendar has been marked by one big event after another – terrorist attacks, Iraq war, dot.com implosion, and Katrina – I’m for not putting any more dates on the calendar – I’m for the little events like dinner with a loved one, walking my dog, loving my lover. The next big date I want to pencil in is Nov 4th when we elect Obama as our new president.
Little by little you work away the blues and get back to normal after evacuation and re-entry – it just doesn’t happen overnight. It’s nice to have friends and neighbors and a place you love to ground you back into routine.
Some people don’t read the comment section of my blog so for the record – I wrote about preferring to go to CC’s on Esplanade than Fair Grinds – that is when I want to sit outside with Loca (she needs a wide berth) – otherwise Fair Grinds is a wonderful choice for a coffee shop in MidCity and I highly recommend it. The owner has been a leader in our community and the coffee…
We went out for coffee and reading last night to the Fair Grinds since CC’s on Esplanade is open only till 3PM post-storm. We ran into friends and one spoke about trying to apply for a grant for a mental health facility. Their first angle was we are a city all suffering from PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) from Katrina and that Gustav just reopened old wounds so we are ripe for some assistance. We’re…
Here is a good reason to crack open a novel – below is the short list for the Booker Prize as excerpted from the NYT: “The White Tiger” by Mr. Adiga is the dark story of class struggle told by an Indian man who murders his employer. It was published in the United States by Free Press. Mr. Adiga, 33, a native of India who spent part of his childhood in Australia, is a former…
It’s great to be home, to not be thinking of Ike, to be contemplating the weekend and a Turkish party at Swirl on Friday, a fun party at friend’s on Saturday, a long bike ride on the North Shore Sunday morning with the MS group I’m riding with in October. But there is this incredible weariness in my bones – just like a tired I can’t seem to shake and I think it’s post-storm calm.…
