The city that never sleeps

Arrived in Manhattan a little over an hour ago and the cacophony was insta-present – made New Orleans seem like my country home. When I checked into the midtown hotel, the desk clerk looked at my license and said he had gone to college in New Orleans – to Xavier – said he misses jambalaya, crawfish, the music, the people – I said what are you doing here then, pray tell? Come spend your hard…

Obama and me

I would like to believe that Obama made history today as the first black man to be nominated and that Hillary lost the nomination because she represented corrupt politics while Obama represents a vision of change. That is the way I see it rather than we’ll take a black man over a woman (which I heard in passing at the airport).

Pool envy

My neighbors blew up a baby pool in the backyard and all we hear are squeals. I passed a house with three little kids in a baby pool and the mother was hosing them and the man who happened to pass by – again squeals. In New Orleans, when the heat index is waxing, there is only one thing we covet and that is a pool. Pool envy runs deep.

Luddites in the midst

What price progress. Charles Eames said who would have known we’d miss the sound of crystal clinking when plastic glasses came on the scene. What about lying in my bed on Mason Street with a sliver of the San Francisco bay out my window listening to the foghorns – which were replaced by digital beeps no one but the ships themselves could hear. Velcro instead of laces (how do kids learn to tie a bow?).…

The muse that calms me

T has had to wake me up each morning since she’s returned – unusual when I typically rocket out of bed upon waking. She has been walking Loca in the morning with me because I’m off to NY so soon after she arrived – my pace is slower with her beside me. When Loca takes off after a squirrel, T calms Loca and tells her that squirrels are our friend and then she strokes her…

The dog days of summer

Just around dusk, T and I and Loca went for a walk around the bayou. We first stopped by Swirl and then made our way to Desaix and back around. The ducks were plentiful with a summer hatching of 10 ducklings. The heat had gone down a few degrees with the impending storm rolling in. The light was perfect as only the gloaming can offer up. We walked and spoke in terms of our future…

Lessons in Life

My ex father-in-law said something that struck me once when we were out back looking at a big crater he had dug in the yard – he was musing about the crater and when he actually might get around to planting that enchanting garden he had originally dug the hole for and he said, “Sometimes it’s better to think about doing something than actually doing it.” So many things in life can be boiled down…

Today is T-day

It was hotter than hell by the time I got on my bike a little after 8 this morning, but it still felt good enough to try for 40 miles. I only put in about 30 because everyone had a headstart on me and I wound up meeting up with them all at Russell’s for breakfast and seabreezes. I woke this morning with a few things lighter in my mind than I went to bed…
