Hotter than a skillet

The heat index in New Orleans was about 106 yesterday and right now it is already there again – the forecast shows no rain in site – so the garden is thirsty, I’m thirsty, and there is no relief in sight. But we’ll take blazing heat over a hurricane any day. Meanwhile in Arizona, one of my sources said it is cool there today.

This fragile emotional architecture – a sign of the times or our age?

Yesterday – Sunday – a day of rest – was anything but. After biking, then watering the plants that were slumping in the 105 degree heat and humidity – I spent the afternoon working, trying to organize the myriad of topics that I am covering and find a game plan because the one I have isn’t working for me. In the evening, what was going to be a small supper with J, turned into another…

Too much information

I went for a bike ride and was reflecting on my day yesterday when suddenly I felt the unfamiliar pain of Ginsu knives sticking inside my innards. My periods always felt like my uterus was falling out and ovulation was the Ginsu knives. Ovulating? Come on – this is 110 days without a period and now my body is going to ovulate – it’s like some Karmic joke. The bike ride was no picnic but…

TKO

I was supposed to be making dinner Saturday night with a bunch of friends but the plans got altered and I took it as an opportunity to do my own thing – so I hopped in Blue and headed to Elmwood to see Knocked Up – the much touted summer comedy. The show was good and funny, but there were also parts that hit a little to close to the bone – like when the…

Farmer’s Market

J and I went to the Farmer’s Market to get fixings for dinner, and I found all the herbs I was looking for as well as some gorgeous perennials for the garden – vervain, buddlea, cleredendra, abutilon and golden rod joined parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme. We got shrimp at $5 a pound – that looked gorgeous. When I was buying my Creole tomatoes – the guy said of all things he had farmed the…

Porch parties at the LaLa

Friday ended up being all about finding a place to be and staying there. My neighbor was on the bayou with margaritas early in the evening so I went over and had one. Then T came over and then G and we drank wine and listened to music on the porch. J got in and came over to join us and before you know it M was stopping in to join the fun. We turned…

Baby steps

I was interviewing a guy for the book and he was recounting the horrid story of his Katrina aftermath and I said, well, how are you doing now with it all? And he said, “Baby steps.” Ain’t that the truth. Interestingly enough it turns out he is a midcentury furniture freak and so he loved the house and the furniture and said that he and I are probably the only ones in this town that…

I told you it works

The J-man was being taught about how throwing a coin in a fountain entitles you to a wish. So he threw a coin in and said he wished to go to “City Park” and caught both L & M off guard because I am taking him this Saturday to ride the train and go on the rides – so L broke down later and said you know what you wished for? Well Ocho is taking…

Dog in a bucket

Wayne and Timothy are here fixing the front door – they shortened it, put in a bronze threshold that I got which has an interlocking feature, and they also redid the fins – except now one is too short, so that is going to have to be made from scratch. While they were working, I went down to check on them – the first time Timothy said, “You have a beautiful house and I can…
