A nice end to Jazz Fest

I flew back from NY early Sunday morning in time to catch the last day of Jazz Fest. I left Steve at the LaLa to work while I ventured out to hear some great music. I was trying to hook up with one of my online advertising sources and we kept missing each other as both of us succumbed to the heat. I wound up under a food tent where a kind woman took a…

David Halberstam

My boss quoted Halberstam, who recently died in an automobile accident in Menlo Park, California, during our conference – it echoes a lot about who my boss is and who we are collectively – this is from a speech he gave at Columbia to the journalist students after winning an award: Thank you for this award and thank you for letting me share this very special day with you. Some 50 years ago, give or…

Can’t work anywhere else

We had our annual reporter’s conference, which is an opportunity for all of us to see in person people we spend the rest of the year only emailing and IMing or talking to on the phone. Seeing, touching, are so important for the virtual workers of the world. I always come away from these events feeling lucky to be part of this organization. This time was no different. As I stood on the dance floor…

Birthday in Soho

I spent my birthday on a plane to NY for our annual reporter’s conference – I told G who was flying with me that I just wanted a quiet night and dinner and then to bed. But I got a call right when I landed from one of my colleagues who asked if he could join us for just a drink. Then I received a call from two other colleagues who wanted to join for…

The best part of turning 48

When I told our driver – Albert – that I turned 48 he said there is no way in the world you are 48 – you don’t look it at all and I said well honey I am and I’ve come a long way baby. 48 – I salute you! But this is going to be my birthday month I’ve decided because I don’t want the festivities to end.

A 1000 men at my house

I told M that all I wanted was for the house to look nice for Steve and for Jazz Fest and suddenly a thousand men wound up at my house on Tuesday and started building a fence, bricking the driveway, painting the side of the house and lo and behold it was chaos – chaos that was still in full tilt when I brought Steve from the airport.

My birthday has been a blast so far!

Who says getting older has to be a drag? The night before my birthday, Steve arrived and as we sat on the porch sipping La Reve champagne and him smoking a Cuban, the Puerto Rican girls came over with guitar in hand and serenaded me with Feliz Cumpleanos. The next morning G and I flew to NY for our reporters conference and we stayed in Soho and even though I was trying to have a…

Channeling correctly

I woke up this morning to a bevy of men surrounding my house – bricks to be laid, fences to be built, house to be painted – and I just wanted to crawl back in bed. Why on my busiest work days does the LaLa go into warp speed? So I snapped at all of them and said I don’t care what they want I am up here working and to leave me alone. All…
